Dear Mrs. McVeigh,
I am married and with kids. Whenever I am out with a bunch of friends who are also married moms, we get sort of annoyed when men start talking and flirting with us. It is very flattering, but we seldom get to go out much, so all we want to do is talk to one another, and not be bothered by anyone. When in this situation, what is a polite way to get men to move on, and leave us alone? Thanks!
T.S.
Dear T.S.
This is a tricky situation, and I appreciate that you do not want to be rude to anyone. When in this situation, I would say as few words as possible, and then turn back to my friends. If he/they do not get the hint, then say something like, “Well, it was nice talking to you,” and turn your back. If he still does not understand you not wanting to talk to him, then I would start talking about things that someone outside your group would not have interest in, and purposely excluding him, such as changing dirty diapers and spit-up. You did your best to be polite, and now you have to take control of the situation without causing a scene. If needed, relocate to another part of the restaurant or bar.
